Resumo: Aiming to assess the effects of blood plasma and antibiotics on performance and / or intestinal microstructure of piglets weaned at different ages, four experiments were conducted. In one experiment, 96 piglets weaned at 35 days of age in experimental design of randomized blocks with four treatments and eight replications with three animals per experimental unit. The treatments were: control; diet blood plasma; diet, and blood plasma including antibiotic and diet inclusion of antibiotic. No statistical differences on the performance parameters of the piglets were observed when compared to the control treatment periods 35-41, 42 to 56 and 35 to 56 days of age and on villus height and crypt in the duodenum and jejunum when compared piglets the control treatment at 42 days of age. In the second experiment, 96 piglets weaned at 35 days of age in experimental design of randomized blocks with four treatments and eight replications with three animals per experimental unit. The treatments were: control; diet blood plasma; diet, and blood plasma including diet without antibiotic and inclusion of antibiotic. No statistical differences on the performance parameters of the piglets were observed when compared to the control treatment periods 35-41, 42 to 56 and 35 to 56 days of age and on villus height and crypt in the duodenum and jejunum when compared piglets the control treatment at 42 days of age. For the third experiment, 72 piglets weaned at 21 days of age in experimental design of randomized blocks with three treatments and twenty-four repetitions with one animal per experimental unit. The treatments were: control; diet with addition of antibiotics and diet blood plasma. From 36 to 49 days of age, the piglets were fed a diet with the same composition including antibiotic. The diets were supplied in a controlled manner so as to ensure equal consumption per replicate. Significant differences were observed in weight gains of piglets between treatment with blood plasma and the control treatment in the period 21-35 days of age and from 21 to 49 days of age. Piglets from treatment with blood plasma showed 22.1% lower feed conversion than pigs from control treatment in the period 21-35 days of age and 13.0% lower in the period 21-49 days of age. In experiment four, 72 piglets weaned at 28 days of age in experimental design of randomized blocks with three treatments and twenty-four repetitions with one animal per experimental unit. The treatments were: control; diet with addition of antibiotics and diet blood plasma. From 36 to 49 days of age, the piglets were fed a diet with the same composition including antibiotic. The diets were supplied in a controlled manner so as to ensure equal consumption per replicate. Significant differences were observed in weight gains of piglets between treatment with blood plasma and the control treatment in the period 28-35 days of age and from 28 to 49 days of age. Piglets from treatment with blood plasma showed 23.9% lower feed conversion than pigs from control treatment in the period 28-35 days of age and 5.6% lower in the period 28-49 days of age. It follows that the plasma used in the first or the first two weeks after weaning improves the weight gain of piglets weaned at 21, 28 and 35 days of age, demonstrating the blood plasma has other effects than just increase in consumption ration. The beneficial effects of the blood plasma used in the first week after weaning is maintained thereafter as diets with or without antibiotics are used in this period.
