Resumo: | There is around 4.516 millions hectares of eucalyptus crops in Brazil, which represents the largest area of this plant in the world. This plant species is attacked by many insect pests because the homogeneous ecosystem and the abundance of food that can favor the establishment of these insects. Different measures and techniques for pest control in eucalyptus crops have been used, developed and enhanced to protect these forests against the attack that can reduce the development of trees, decreasing the wood quality and even cause its death. Biological control by the use of predatory stink bugs is an alternative control that presents a great potential against caterpillar outbreaks by avoiding the use of chemical pesticides that can cause problems to the environment and human health. The success of the use of these insects depends on the knowledge about the mass rearing methods and techniques, since techniques of egg mass manipulation until pre-release techniques, association of predatory species and the knowledge about dispersion of these insects for a higher efficience of them in the field. The without food periods to the predatory bugs Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) and Brontocoris tabidus (Signoret) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), before the release cannot be longer than 24 hours because of the increase of cannibalism and the use of plant material is important in order to decrease this behavior on adults and eggs during this period. The water obtained of plant is important to the process of extra-oral digestion what improve the efficiency of the attack of these predators. Besides, the use of both predatory bugs together in the field can increase the foraging area and it is also recommended releases in lower densities and as more release points as possible to improve the predator foraging, dispersion and colonization of the attacked area. |
