Do contexto familiar ao universitário: o campo de possibilidades para a construção de territórios e identidades homossexuais

The objective of this research is understand what means for homosexual students who moved in to a college town away from their family and origins in terms of construction and affirmation of their identities. It was examined the routine of these students, their groups, social networks, places where they use to go as well as how their relationship with their family has changed after leaving home. The population studied was formed by thirty homosexual students of Federal University of Viçosa who are not originally from the city. In order to comprehend their territorial and social reality the group was submitted to semi-structured interviews. As a result, the research showed that, in everyday life, these students have social ties that are based on friendship and collaboration with other college students, not all of them gays, creating an identity "ufeviana" which, besides being bigger than the homosexual identity, helps maintain a separation between locals and outsiders. In the city, the college gay students have shown preferences to attend in places of entertainment and leisure where are considered more tolerant, such as bars, gay chat and GLS parties. Although the relationship with their family has remained unchanged for most gays and lesbians, Viçosa has allowed them to reach a significant changing in terms of building their homosexual identities. For those who had already admitted their sexual identity before they move out, Viçosa offer several possibilities to live that experience freely. For those who had not yet "gone out of the closet," to be in Viçosa is the time to get it done.
