Resumo: Two trials were conducted from May to November 2004. Each experimental period lasted 15 days nine for diet adaptation and six for collections. In the first experiment, twelve Nellore of three sexual categories (four heifers, four bulls and four steers) averaging 15 months of age and body weight of 235, 249, and 239 kg, respectively, were assigned to a completely randomized design with a 2 x3 factorial arrangement (two levels of concentrate 25 or 50% and three sexual categories) to evaluate intake, partial and total tract digestibility of nutrients, microbial protein synthesis and ruminal metabolism. The estimation of both fecal excretion of DM and duodenal DM flow was done using chromium oxide. The collection of ruminal fluid was done at and 2, 4, and 6 hours after-feeding to determine pH and ammonia concentration. Ruminal samples for bacterial isolation also was collected 6 hours post-feeding. With the exception of EE, no other significant effect of concentrate levels and sexual categories was observed on intake and partial or total tract digestibility of nutrients. The intakes of DM, OM, EE, CP, TDN (kg/day) and DM (% BW or g/kg075) were neither affected by the concentrate levels nor by sexual category. Increasing dietary concentrate levels decreased NDF digestibility. Average bacterial N contents ranged from 6.91 to 7.39. No significant effect of concentrate levels and sexual category was observed on duodenal flow of nutrients and microbial efficiency excepted when expressed as MicN/kgOMDR. Maximum ruminal NH3 concentration (14.55 mg/dL) was estimated at 1.83 hours after-feeding. It was concluded that increasing dietary concentrate levels did not affect intake, partial and total tract digestibility of most nutrients and microbial protein synthesis. In the second experiment, twelve Nellore bovines fistulated in the rumen and duodenum were allotted to three Latin squares (four animals, four CP levels: 7, 10, 13, and 15% and four periods) to evaluate the intake, partial and total tract digestibility of DM, OM, CP, EE, NDF, and NFC, microbial protein synthesis, ruminal metabolism, nitrogen balance and metabolizable protein requirements for maintenance. The samples were ruminally incubated in each sexual category to estimate total tract digestibility of ingredients. The collection of ruminal fluid was done at and after-feeding to determine pH and ammonia concentration. Ruminal samples for bacterial isolation also was collected at and 6 hours post-feeding. The urea concentrations were estimated in the urine (UU) and blood serum (US). Estimation of fecal DM output and duodenal DM flow was done using the internal marker indigestible acid detergent fiber. Total collection of urine was conducted from day 13 to day 14 on each period. Metabolic fecal nitrogen, urinary endogenous losses and total endogenous losses were all estimated using a regression approach. No effect of sexual categories on metabolizable protein requirements for maintenance (approximately 4.0 g/kg0.75) was observed in this trial.

Cada período experimental teve duração de 15 dias nove para adaptação às dietas e seis para as coletas. No primeiro, doze bovinos Nelore de três condições sexuais (CS), sendo quatro fêmeas, quatro machos castrados e quatro machos não-castrados, com idade aproximada de 15 meses e peso vivo médio de 235, 249 e 239 kg, respectivamente, foram distribuídos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 2 x 3, sendo dois níveis de concentrado (25 ou 50%) e três CS, objetivando-se estudar o consumo, a digestibilidade total e parcial dos nutrientes, a produção microbiana e os parâmetros ruminais. A produção de matéria seca fecal e os fluxos de matéria seca (MS) no duodeno foram estimados com o óxido crômico. As coletas de líquido ruminal, para determinar o pH e a concentração de amônia, foram realizadas antes do fornecimento da dieta e 2, 4 e 6 horas após a alimentação e, para isolar os microrganismos ruminais, 6 horas após o fornecimento da dieta. Não houve interação significativa entre níveis de concentrado e CS para nenhum dos consumos observados e também para as digestibilidades aparentes totais e parciais dos nutrientes, com exceção do EE. Os consumos de MS, MO, EE, PB, NDT, em kg/dia, e de MS em % do PV ou em g/kg0,75, não foram influenciados pelos níveis de concentrado ou CS. O aumento do nível de concentrado reduziu a digestibilidade da FDN. Os teores médios de N nas bactérias variaram de 6,91 a 7,39% da MS. O fluxo de nutrientes e a eficiência microbiana, expressa de diferentes formas, com exceção de gNmic/kgMODR, não foram influenciados pelos níveis de concentrados e CS. A concentração de NH3 máxima de 14,55 mg/dL foi estimada 1,83 horas após a alimentação. Concluiu-se que o aumento dos níveis de concentrado na dieta não resultou em respostas positivas para os consumos, as digestibilidades parciais e totais da maioria dos nutrientes e a produção microbiana. No segundo experimento, objetivou-se avaliar os consumos, as digestibilidades totais e parciais da MS, MO, PB, EE, FDN e CNF, a produção microbiana, os parâmetros ruminais, o balanço de nitrogênio, e as exigências de proteína para mantença, em doze bovinos Nelore, fistulados no rúmen e duodeno, de três (CS), sendo quatro fêmeas, quatro machos castrados e quatro machos não-castrados, com idade aproximada de 16 meses e peso vivo médio de 254,8; 285,1 e 265,6 kg, respectivamente, distribuídos em três quadrados latinos 4 x 4, sendo quatro animais, quatro níveis de proteína bruta (7, 10, 13 e 15%) e quatro períodos. As amostras foram incubadas em um animal de cada condição sexual, para se estimar a degradabilidade dos ingredientes. O pH e a concentração de amônia foram determinados antes e após a alimentação e, para isolar os microrganismos ruminais, coletas de digesta ruminal foram efetuadas 6 horas após o fornecimento da dieta. As concentrações de uréia foram estimadas na urina e no soro sangüíneo. A produção de MS fecal e os fluxos de MS no duodeno foram estimados com a fibra em detergente acido indigestível. A coleta total de urina de cada animal foi realizada do 13o ao 14o dia de cada período. O nitrogênio metabólico fecal (NMF) foi estimado por regressão entre o N absorvido (Y) e a ingestão de N (X), expressos em g/kg MS. Para nenhum dos consumos dos nutrientes, houve efeito significativo da interação quadrado latino (condição sexual) e níveis de proteína nas dietas. Os consumos diários de todos os nutrientes foram influenciados pelos níveis de PB das dietas, com exceção do EE e CNF. As digestibilidades totais da MS, MO, PB, FDN e CNF foram influenciadas pelos níveis de PB nas dietas, assim como houve aumento das concentrações de uréia no soro (US), nitrogênio uréico no soro (NUS) e uréia na urina (UU). Ao contrário do pH, houve interação entre níveis de PB na dieta, e tempos de coleta, para o NH3. Os consumos, as digestibilidades dos nutrientes e a produção microbiana, como também as digestões ruminais, com exceção da PB, não foram influenciados pela condição sexual. Conclui-se que as digestibilidades totais da maioria dos nutrientes foram incrementadas com o aumento do teor de PB nas dietas. Houve efeito da condição sexual apenas sobre o nitrogênio ingerido, observando-se maior consumo para os machos castrados em relação às fêmeas. A ingestão de compostos nitrogenados, a excreção fecal e urinário e o balanço de compostos nitrogenados aumentaram linearmente com os teores dietéticos de PB. Foram registrados valores de 6,69 de gN/kgMS ingerida e 0,133 gN/kg0,75 para o NMF e nitrogênio endógeno urinário (NEU), respectivamente. A exigência líquida de proteína foi estimada em 0,431 gN/kg0,75 ou 2,69 g de proteína/ kg0,75.
