Resumo: | The great economic, social and environmental importance of eucalyptus has led to the use of process-based growth models, especially the 3-PG model, to determine the productive capacity of the forest site. This model, however, needs to be provided with resolution at the soil level so that it may be an effective tool for forest management. For this, it is believed that the development of a pedological modulator capable of reflecting flows of air, water and nutrients, and their use in this model is an appropriate strategy. Thus, to evaluate the physical quality of soil an S index has been proposed, characterized by the slope of the soil water retention curve at its point of inflection, which requires evaluation in the soils cultivated with eucalyptus. The objective of this study was to determine the S index to assess its relationship with physical characteristics of the soil and eucalyptus productivity, for their use to represent physical quality in the pedological modulator to be used in the 3-PG model. For this purpose, the water retention curves were obtained in accordance with the van Genuchten model in Oxisols, Inceptsols and Fluvents samples from the Vale do Rio Doce, MG, Brazil; the "S" index was determined and correlated with bulk density, total porosity, macroporosity, microporosity, the macroporosity/microporosity ratio, and levels of clay, silt plus clay and organic matter. The relationship of the "S" index with eucalyptus productivity (mean annual increment, MAI7) and the ratio of yields (MAI7/MAIp, where MAIp is the potential yield, estimated by 3-PG model), was made by the Boundary Line method . The "S" index was related to the soil physical characteristics that reflect the porous system and the organic matter content, being able to represent the physical quality of soils cultivated with eucalyptus and thus useful for integrating a pedological modulator to be used in process-based growth models, such as the 3-PG model. Ranges of "S" values associated with soil physical quality class for eucalyptus are proposed. Approximately 80% of the soils cultivated with eucalyptus in the Vale do Rio Doce - MG present good physical quality. |

Ranges of "S" values associated with soil physical quality class for eucalyptus are proposed. Approximately 80% of the soils cultivated with eucalyptus in the Vale do Rio Doce - MG present good physical quality.
