Desenvolvimento ninfal e morfologia do trato digestivo e reprodutor de fêmeas de Phibalosoma phyllinum (Phasmidae)

Phibalosoma phyllinum is the Brazilian most common Phasmatodea. The nymphal development and the morphology of the main organs of both digestive and reproductive apparatus of the female were studied. Nymphs were fed on guava (Psidium guajava), mango (Mangifera indica) and Surinam cherry (Eugenia uniflora) leaves and their body size were measured, and their behavior and reproduction were observed. Nymphal instars fed on Surinam cherry leaves and on mango developed bigger body sizes. The digestory tract of P. phillyinum was described as a long, slightly differing anatomically tube since the mouth up to the anus. The front portion of middle intestine has folded walls, whereas back portion has no folds. The passage from middle to posterior intestine is characterized by having numerous Malpighi tubules. The thin intestine is known for its wall with epidelio folds formed by an only layer of cells, which are cubic and spherical nucleus. The rectum of P. phyllinum comprises simple epitelio, with flat cells and long nucleus, presenting a light covered by an evident cuticle and the musculature more developed with longitudinal and circular fibers. The females of this species have a pair of pectinada ovaries which pass through the whole abdomen. An accessory gland was found associated to reproductive apparatus opened by the common oviduct. Histochemical tests showed that the gland is rich in carbohydrates, proteins and some lipid content.
