Câncer: repercussões na família e a humanização em uma Casa de Apoio na perspectiva dos cuidadores

This research was based on the assumptions that the illness of a family member can influence and change the organization and the family structure both positively and negatively, and that the humanization and volunteer work are important in health institutions, particularly those specializing in cancer treatments. Accordingly, our objective was to analyze, from the perspective of caregivers of cancer patients, the impact of cancer in the family and the humanization as well as the experience and volunteer work in a Support House for patients with cancer located in Muriaé MG. For this, we used a case study in a descriptive quality approach, whose sample consisted of twenty-two caregivers, one coordinator and three volunteers. The method of data collection used in this study was the semi structured interview and the method used to analyze the data was the content analysis. The analysis of semi structured interviews was conducted by predefined categories from theoretical and empirical indicators, taking into consideration the proposed objectives for this research. There were three categories: "Family and cancer", "Humanization in the Support House" and "The Experience at the Support House." Some of these categories were subdivided into subcategories, and in themes. Besides these categories, also the Support House was analyzed on the physical structure, purpose, operation, teamwork and volunteerism, and characterized the study population in socioeconomic and cultural aspects. It was found that the family when seen as a system, is influenced and changed when one of its members is affected by a disease. Regarding the Support House, we can say that it is essential for the permanence of treatments of cancer patients and puts into practice many of the assumptions of humanization. However, the need for revision of professional-users communication was noted. Finally, we realized that the volunteering becomes important in the Support House everyday, but that it requires a specific coordination. It is considered that the proposed objectives were satisfactorily achieved and that this research contributes to broader discussions about the family in the health-disease process and its interface with health institutions and their new configurations of service, and also hospitality from the humanization and volunteering.
