Based on recent studies concerning the Planning and Environmental design, this case study analyzes the urban landscape formation process of Viçosa, Minas Gerais and to list the environmental impacts caused by the spontaneous growth. Firstly, it was made a historical analysis of the appearance and development of the city, intenting to characterize the factors that impelled its growth and which the elements that addressed the amplification of its area. Four moments were analyzed throughout the development of the city: the origin of the municipal district, its first expansion between 1813 1900, the growth between 1900 1960 and from 1960 until the current days. Understood the relationships that configured the city with which it live together today, the second part has got the beginning based on the evaluation of the negative environmental impacts related to each one of the mentioned periods. The obtained results showed that the biggest environmental damages were caused starting on 70 s when the city started an accelerated urbanization process. Among the main problems in this case, it can be mentioned the occupation of the hillsides and hill tops, the occupation along the rivers, the soil satbility compromising caused by the cuts and embankments and the vegetation removal. Finally, measures were suggested to mitigate the diagnosed impacts. Throughout this study, were can show the dimension of environmental problems present in the city and to point the areas that run the most risk and were planning works should take place firstly.
