Jatropha curcas is standing out as a species of oil plants greater ability to produce non-fossil fuel. However, it has uneven production throughout the year, necessitating storage of the seeds until the proper time for the production of seedlings. Besides the quality of the seed storage also affects the quality of oil extracted from these seeds. The conservation of oil is directly related to the nature and quality of raw materials and especially, their storage conditions. This study aimed: i) erevaluate the physiological quality of seeds of this species placed in three containers and stored in two locations along twelve months, ii) determine the biochemical and physiological changes in Jatropha curcas seeds during storage; iii) evaluate the effect of storing seeds of Jatropha curcas under different environmental conditions and packaging on the quantity and quality of oil produced by them. For this purpose, freshly harvested seeds of Jatropha curcas, the water content of around 7%, were stored under natural and laboratory cold chamber, in kraft paper bags, woven polypropylene fiber drum and along a years. At zero, three, six, nine and twelve months seeds were evaluated: i) the physiological quality, the tests for water content, germination, first count germination, germination speed index, seedling length, accelerated aging test of cold soil emergence and emergence speed index, ii) the physiological and biochemical characteristics: germination, vigor and lipids, starches, sugars, proteins and lipid peroxidation, iii) quality of the extracted oil: oil content and acid content, saponification and iodine. Packaging paper bag and polypropylene woven in cold conditions were more appropriate to retain the physiological quality of seeds and its oil. Under these conditions, we observed the maintenance of quality up to six months of storage.
