Resumo: International migration by Brazilians has significantly increased in the last decades. Historically known as the destination of several migratory groups, especially after 1980, Brazil witnesses today an expressive number of Brazilians leaving to other countries. Today s globalization and the profound world market changes have become the solution Brazilians have found in their search for better living conditions. In the absence of a family member, the family that stays behind undergoes new experiences and transformations. Thus, this work aimed to analyze the effect of international migration on the families whose member or members migrated to other countries and what this experience meant for the group, as well as to analyze the transformations that international migration has been causing on the economy and urban space of Ipaba-MG. The qualitative approach research included a semi-structured interview of 12 migrant families from this municipality as well as a theoretical discussion on the topics international migration, family, and social network. The results showed that people migrate from Ibapa to the United States to fulfill the dream of having their own house. In order to fulfill this dream, they can count on their family members who help fund their trip, look after their interests in town and also provide the necessary support for their return through the formation of a social network. With the money sent back to the family members, the municipality s economy has been gradually improving, especially in the civil construction sector through houses that are being built, changing the local urban space. Even so, migration changes family organization especially regarding social role changes occurring in the migrant s family. With the father leaving, the mother becomes the head of the family alone, taking care of the children, and even controlling the finances, expanding her role in the family group. However, we observed that strategies have been created to maintain the absent father s power and authority and the loss of the role of wives leading a life without their husbands. For the families, the migratory experience may mean the possibility of improved living conditions, and learning how to live separate lives, with the possibility of improved family relations promoted by distance and prolonged absence. It was concluded that international migration in the municipality of Ipaba is a collective project, as it reflects family expectations that are dependent on an effective participation of the family members financially, socially and emotionally, with defined time and purpose, continually implying in losses and gains for both the migrants and their families.

It was concluded that international migration in the municipality of Ipaba is a collective project, as it reflects family expectations that are dependent on an effective participation of the family members financially, socially and emotionally, with defined time and purpose, continually implying in losses and gains for both the migrants and their families.
