Resumo: The automobile industry is considered one of the most important sectors for the global economy. The importance of this sector is even greater when aggregated to technological innovation and productive broadcast from their development, thus representing an economic linkages in the production chain that generates more income, employment and industrial investment. As one of the segments that most depend on loans and financing, the auto sector was among the first to suffer the impacts of the credit crash occurred in 2008. Thus, this thesis aims at evaluating the technical efficiency of a set of 10 automakers in Brazilian automotive industry during the period 2004-2008 through the Window Analysis. The other objective of this research is to analyze the influence of the technical efficiency and technology change in the productivity of automakers through Malmquist index. The method that is characteristic of this research is DEA - Data Envelopment Analysis. The results are consistent with the hypothesis, when detected significant increases in technical efficiency and productivity, mainly due to technological progress. However, due to the increase in idle capacity, the automakers have inefficiency on the scale of production.

A importância desse setor é ainda maior quando agregada às inovações tecnológicas e produtivas difundidas a partir do seu desenvolvimento, representando, assim, um dos elos econômicos da cadeia produtiva que mais gera renda, emprego e investimentos industriais. Sendo um dos segmentos que mais depende de empréstimos e financiamentos, o setor automobilístico foi um dos primeiros a sofrer os impactos do travamento do crédito ocorrido em 2008. Assim, esta dissertação tem como finalidade principal avaliar a eficiência técnica de um conjunto de 10 montadoras da indústria automobilística brasileira durante o período de 2004 a 2008 através da Análise de Janela. O outro objetivo desta pesquisa é analisar a influência da variação da eficiência técnica e da mudança de tecnologia na produtividade dos produtores através do índice de Malmquist. O método que caracteriza o desenvolvimento da presente pesquisa é DEA Data Envelopment Analysis. Os resultados obtidos são condizentes com a hipótese levantada, ao serem detectados aumentos significativos de eficiência técnica e produtividade, principalmente devido ao progresso tecnológico.
