Technical, volunteers or mandatory standards are frequently used as indirect forms of national markets protection, and represent important factors that restrict the circulation of goods. In Brazil the debate on the theme takes place in restricted specialized forums, and just a small portion of the business community has recognized its gravity.The own concept of "technical barrier" is not well understood, being mistakenly associated with exporters difficulties in meeting technical demands required by the countries that buy their products.This work aimed at investigating some of the consequences of the FTAA to the Brazilian food industries taking into account the technical and sanitary barriers created as protectionist measures by the countries that will take part of the block.Towards this end, it has been analyzed some aspects of how the subject as well as technical barriers were treated in commercial negotiations already accomplished in the European Union, in the World Trade Organization, in MERCOSUL and in NAFTA. This study suggests the need to overrule all non-tax barriers and the importance of standards harmonization, trade technical regulations and conformance evaluation procedures for the development in the hemisphere that is the main objective of Committee Codex Alimentarius. Besides, the decrease of cost Brazil is seen as a requirement to improve its competitiveness guarantee. These topics were analyzed when describing Brazilian positioning on ongoing negotiations, warning for distinct demands from the Brazilian society and from those from other countries that will integrate the block, mostly USA, the most restrictive one, by protectionist measures over foreign products.
