Resumo: | The bagasse and straw of sugar cane are two kinds of the sugar industry waste, they are rich in lignocellulosic components, such as cellulose and hemicellulose, which can be used in biorefinery processes. This study aimed to characterize chemical, physical and morphological materials and optimize the process soda/ethanol pulping of these materials. The work was divided into two chapters, the characterization results will be presented in Chapter 1 and pulping in Chapter 2. Bagasse and straw were used for sugar cane (UFV / RIDESA RB867515), harvested at 5 months old. These materials were analyzed for their chemical, physical and morphological characteristics. In Chapter 1 it was concluded that the main components of these materials were glucans, xylan and lignin, with values of 41.8%, 24.8% and 21.4% for bagasse and 41.4%, 26.0% and 16.2% for the straw, respectively. The ratio H: G: S bagasse (1: 2.1: 2.2) was more favorable for the chemical deconstruction of the straw (1: 3.7: 1.7). The straw showed high levels of ash (7.9%) and silica (5.8%) compared to bagasse (2.3% ash and 1.4% silica). The content of total extractives of bagasse and straw were 15.0 and 12.2%, respectively. The basic density and bulk density of bagasse were 131 and 76 kg/m3; for straw they were 173 and 64 kg/m3, respectively. The morphological analysis of the materials classified fibers as short, with average lengths of 1.59 and 1.61 mm for bagasse and straw, respectively. In chapter 2, it was evaluated the process of soda/ethanol pulping of bagasse and straw in a factorial experimental design with three central composition of independent variables and three different levels for each. It was kept fixed relative to liquor / material (14/1 L/kg) and loads of soda for 15 and 10% bagasse and straw, respectively. It was concluded that sugarcane bagasse is more suitable for the production of cellulose pulp than straw. The optimum condition of bagasse pulping to kappa number 12.0 ± 0.3 was 195°C for 90 minutes at a concentration of 25% ethanol in the cooking liquor and soda 15% dry matter basis. In this condition, the retention of glycans and xylans on pulp was approximately 69 and 42%, respectively. The great condition of the straw pulping for kappa number of 12.0 ± 0.3 was 195°C for 150 minutes at a concentration of 25% ethanol in the cooking liquor and soda 10% dry matter basis. In this condition, the retention of glycans and xylans on pulp was approximately 54 and 30%, respectively. |
