The possibility of product differentiation and market segmentation is a factor that has influenced competitiveness of agro-industrial products over the past years. For this reason, some quality attributes, which undergo certification, have been incorporated to the final product as instrument of competition. Product certification is a procedure that requires adaptation of productive systems to a series of rules established by the certification agency, for the purpose of inspection and emission of a conformity certificate. The main objectives of this work were to study the production systems and the characteristics of farmers associated to the Regional Association of Coffee Growers (ARCA), analyze the profile of the associates regarding the social, economic and environmental characteristics and relate them to the main characteristics of two certification models. Results showed that 63% of the producers had already heard about coffee certification and 60% have intent to become certified farmers. The conclusion drawn from this work was that the main deficiencies were pesticide use and relationship with labor at harvest time. The greatest advantages observed were that the producers are willing to accept possible modifications in order to obtain the farm certification and know that the certification will bring in more profits with the commercialization of the final product. Considering the evaluated characteristics, the PIC and Fair Trade certification models are found suitable for this association.
