Sustainability is a concept adopted by several productive sectors, which seeks to meet the consumers concerned about the conditions of production regarding the environmental and social practices. Within this context there are certifications and international laws that address these requirements. The Directive 2009/28/EC of the European Parliament, published on April 23rd, 2009, and Bonsucro (Better Sugarcane Initiative), updated on March 11, 2011, are important bases of information. In this context, the sugarcane industry has its practices being monitored around the world and inadequate production practices with this new reality interfere in their products market. The aim of this study was to evaluate the situation of sugar ethanol plants in Minas Gerais concerning their compliance to sustainability criteria. The basis of this evaluation was done from the approach of the five principles contained in the Bonsucro, which are also found in the Directive 2009/28/EC of the European Parliament. The study was conducted from a multicase study, composed of four sugar ethanol plants, in which data were collected through questionnaires. Besides the plants, the Associação das Indústrias Sucroenergéticas de Minas Gerais (SIAMIG) was also interviewed. The results indicate that the studied companies are not yet prepared to receive the Bonsucro certification, because do not meet 80% of the established indicators, which is the minimum required. From the application of the SWOT methodology, was found that plants have many strengths and opportunities, but in the weaknesses, points that undermine them to meet sustainability indicators, are needed larger investments, which combined with the strengths, help to ensure the sustainability of the sector. Throughout the study it was observed that the sugar ethanol plants are adapting to the existing laws and seeking these certifications, but still need to qualify and assume a more preventive rather than corrective posture, thus to accelerate this adjustment process.
