Resumo: The research aimed to study and investigate the process of forming a new centrality in the district of Guinda from the manifestation of the rarity of urban space in the city of Diamantina-MG, through the application of methodologies developed by the schools of urban morphology. The approach to the rarity of urban space and the new centralities in Diamantina allows, in addition to discussions on urban planning and urbanization process, the approach to the dilemma between preservation of Historic Center and new proposals for urban expansion. The intention is that this work is a contribution to studies of urban morphology, as well as the production of urban space under the theme of the rarity of urban space and the formation of new centralities. It is expected that research collaborate for decision making with respect to urban planning not only the city of Diamantina and the district of Guinda, but of the whole municipality. From reflections on the themes addressed, it is expected that this research will contribute to discussions on the production of urban space in other small towns, and especially those with feature architectonic and urban to be preserved.

A abordagem sobre a raridade do espaço urbano e as novas centralidades em Diamantina possibilita, além das discussões sobre planejamento urbano e processo de urbanização, a abordagem sobre preservação do Centro Histórico e as novas propostas de expansão urbana. A intenção é que esse trabalho seja uma contribuição para os estudos de morfologia urbana, assim como os de produção do espaço urbano sob a temática da raridade do espaço urbano e a formação de novas centralidades. Espera-se que a pesquisa colabore para as tomadas de decisão com relação ao planejamento urbano não só da cidade de Diamantina e do distrito de Guinda, mas de todo o município.
