The objective of this work was evaluating and identifying Carioca bean lines with potential to compose the future value for Cultivation and Use (VCU) assays in Minas Gerais. Initially, 69 lines coming from crosses involving the elite lines UTF-0013, CNFC 9437, OPS-82, Carioca 1070 and GEN 12-2 and isoline Rudá-R, used a source of resistance to pathogens of anthracnose, rust and angular leaf spot, were used. The experiments were conducted in the Experimental Station of the Federal University of Viçosa Crop Science Department (Estação Experimental do Departamento de Fitotecnia da Universidade Federal de Viçosa) at Coimbra, Minas Gerais, in the crops of winter of 2009 and of drought and winter of 2010. The randomized block design with three replications and plots of two rows of two meters was employed. Grain yield, plant architecture, grain appearance and rust and angular leaf spot severity were evaluated. On the basis of the evaluated traits, 20 most promising lines were selected and evaluated in the crops of drought, winter and rains of 2011, also at Coimbra, MG. The experimental design and number of replications were the same used previously, with plots of three rows of two meters. Grain yield in all the crops, grain aspect and the plants architeture and rust severity in the winter crop were evaluated. The cooking time was evaluated by utilizing grains collected in the 2010 winter experiment. The evaluation of the severities of anthracnose (races 65 and 453) and of angular leaf spot (race 31.17) was conducted under controlled conditions under inoculation. The individual and pooled analyses of variance of grain yield, plant architecture, grain aspect and rust severity were performed. Based upon the availability and stability of grain yield, by the centroid method and upon the genotype- ideotype distance selection index, eight lines were identified as promising to make-up of the future Value of Cultivation and use of Carioca bean in Minas Gerais: six with general adaptability, one with adaptability to favorable environments and one with adaptability to unfavorable environments. The genotype-ideotype distance selection index proved promising to selection purposes of bean plant lines.
