Resumo: The epidemiologic profile of the taeniasis-cysticercosis complex in the state of Minas Gerais is little known, especially when researches done in the field is concerned. The purpose of this paper was to estimate the prevalence and the risk factors associated to the TC complex in the rural area of Tumiritinga, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. This municipality is located in the Vale do Rio Doce, region located in the East of the State. In the total 101 properties belonging to 15 communities were sampled. Among them, five represented the Agrarian Reform settlements presents in the municipality. The properties were sampled in a ransom way, in which samples of blood from the swine and the cattles and feces from the resident people were collected and epidemiologic surveys were done. The serum samples which were obtained from the animals were analyzed by immunodiagnosis techniques by the ELISA tests (Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay) and Immunoblot. The feces samples were analyzed through the research of eggs and proglottids of Taenia sp through the microscope and the sieving, respectively. Results obtained from computerized tomography exams from individuals suspects with neurocysticercosis were evaluated. The data obtained by the epidemiologic surveys were submitted to different statistical analyses in the EpiInfo 3.5.1 (WHO, 2008) in order to determine the frequencies and risk factors associated to the TC complex. The prevalence of swine and cattle cysticercosis of 5.26% (13/247) and 8.8% (45/508), respectively. The prevalence of positive properties for the cysticercosis swine and cattle was of 9.9% (10/101) and 21.7% (23/101), respectively. These results point out for the endemic occurrence of cysticercosis in the rural area of the municipality. Regarding taeniasis and neurocisticercosis, it was not possible to register positive individuals in the analysis done. The risk factors more strongly associated to animal cysticercosis and that probably contribute to the maintenance of the zoonotic cycle in the municipality were the swine management system (OR: 17,4; p: 0,0001) and the destination for the human feces (OR: 7,2; p: 0,012) as well as the type of property (OR: 6,75; p: 0,03; for bovine). From the five settlements of Agrarian reform present in the municipality the swine and cattle cysticercosis were simultaneously present in two of them. The results diffusion from this research in the municipality will be important for the morbidity decrease as well as the social- economic loss generated by the taeniasis-cysticercosis complex. As a control and preventive measures was proposed the treatment of individuals with taeniasis, adequacy of the human waste capitation, the breeding of incarcerated swine, and the implementation of an extensive orientation work as well as elucidation regarding the zoonosis together with the sampled communities. The results which were obtained will serve as base to substantiate public policies and the foundation of an effective program of prevention and control of the taeniasis-cysticercosis complex in the municipality of Tumiritinga, in the State of Minas Gerais. The results will also help in the development of more deepened researches in the positive properties for the taeniasis-cysticercosis complex. Furthermore, the sample protocol will help the development of new researches in the areas of occurrence of this zoonosis.
