Resumo: The study of the natural ventilation in multi-paved buildings is due to the importance of the air flow for renewal and quality of indoor air as well as the maintenance of thermal comfort within the environments. With this guideline, the main purpose of this research was to qualitatively analyze the dimensional and typological aspects of windows in housing units in multi-paved buildings in the central region of the city of Viçosa, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. We have tried to understand the interrelations between the indoor physical arrangement in the compartments and the windows formal and functional aspects regarding the behavior of the air flow indoors, especially in the kitchen and laundry areas. For this, the procedure consisted of characterization and understanding of the inter-relations among environmental, physical and technical variables in three scales: The building itself, the autonomous unit and the objects (windows). The understanding of the possible constructive practices and the windows dimensioning as well as the potentiality verification for the usage of natural ventilation in the kitchen and laundry areas was done through a survey in 24 housing units available to be allocated, in six buildings that have both residential apartments as well as commercial offices in the central region of Viçosa. The results analyses show, even when in the presence of areas with many buildings that make it more difficult for the natural current of air to circulate, that the central region of Viçosa has effective conditions to take advantage of the natural ventilation in the creation of indoor environments that are hygrothermically comfortable and healthy. The apartments that were surveyed and are proper for the improvement of crossed ventilation depend on maximum physical inter-relation among the sectors, that is, one has to make sure the indoor doors are kept opened as well as the windows exterior facade .The analysis of the physical arrangement in plant, has pointed to limitations for this integration due to the characteristics of the developed activities and to the indoor flow itself. Thus the necessity to have the opening systems with resources that enable greater diversity in the control of intensity and the air flow direction was verified. It was also observed that the window dimensioning should not consider only the calculation of the relationship between total area and floor area or esthetics or economic questions, but to support the project decisions regarding specifications in requirements and performance criteria, to which specific studies for the local conditions are necessary. The field work has also allowed a better understanding of how multiple floor building projects in urban areas are impacted by deficiencies in the city legislation, regarding the windows constructive elements that aim the thermal comfort as well as air quality for the buildings in Viçosa.

Com essa diretriz, o principal objetivo da pesquisa foi analisar qualitativamente os aspectos dimensionais e tipológicos de janelas de unidades habitacionais em edificações de múltiplos pavimentos na região central de Viçosa (MG). Buscou-se compreender as interrelações entre o arranjo físico interno dos compartimentos e os aspectos formais e funcionais das janelas no comportamento do fluxo de ar em ambientes internos, em especial no setor de serviço. Para isso, o procedimento consistiu na caracterização e compreensão das inter-relações entre variáveis ambientais, comportamentais, físicas e técnicas em três escalas: a da edificação como um todo, a da unidade autônoma e a do objeto (janelas). A compreensão das possíveis práticas construtivas e de dimensionamento de janelas e a verificação da potencialidade para utilização da ventilação natural no setor de serviço, realizou-se por meio de pesquisa de campo em 24 unidades habitacionais disponíveis para locação, em seis edificações de uso misto na região central de Viçosa (MG). As análises dos resultados mostram, mesmo na presença de grande massa edificada dificultando a circulação das correntes naturais de ar, a região central de Viçosa dispõe de condições efetivas para tirar proveito da ventilação natural na criação de ambientes internos higrotermicamente confortáveis e saudáveis. As unidades habitacionais pesquisadas propícias ao aproveitamento da ventilação cruzada dependem da máxima inter-relação física entre os setores, ou seja, permanecerem abertas portas internas e janelas da envoltória. A análise do arranjo físico em planta apontou limitações a essa integração devido às características das atividades desenvolvidas e ao próprio fluxo de ar interno. Constatou-se a necessidade de que os sistemas de abertura devem dispor de recursos que propiciem maior diversidade no controle da intensidade e do direcionamento do fluxo de ar e que, o dimensionamento de janelas não deve considerar apenas o cálculo da relação entre a área total da janela e a área do piso ou questões estéticas e econômicas, mas apoiar as decisões de projeto em especificações em requisitos e critérios de desempenho, para o que se fazem necessários estudos específicos para as condições locais.
