Resumo: The aim of this study was to evaluate tools for measurement of lipid mobilization in dairy goats during childbirth by monitoring variations in the area of adipocytes from three distinct regions, the volumetric proportion of lipids in the liver and plasma concentrations of NEFA (NEFA), and the variation in dry matter intake, milk production. We used a completely randomized design with eight treatments, represented by weeks after birth and six replications, with the animal representing the experimental unit. Forty-eight multiparous Alpine breed goats were placed in individual metabolism stalls and fitted with troughs for the supply of feed and water ad libitum. The animals were fed total mixed ration containing corn silage and concentrate mixture. The amount of food offered was calculated taking into account the milk production and body mass of lactating goats being adjusted weekly to meet nutritional requirements. The measurement of milk production was performed daily and individually. The colostrum samples were collected on alternate days and weekly milk samples. For determination of plasma NEFA, 12 animals were used in a completely randomized design. We collected nine, two in the pre-delivery, childbirth and the other six collections postpartum at weekly intervals. The determinations of the concentration of NEFA (mmol / L) were made by enzymatic spectrophotometer. The animals were individually subjected to the daily control of consumption and weekly assessments of weight. Conducted culls day delivery up to 56 days of lactation, six animals per treatment. Fragments of adipose tissue regions perirenal, omental and subcutaneous and liver sample, we performed a histological preparation of the slides subsequently photographed and analyzed using software for image analysis. There was variation in dry matter intake in the postpartum period, with a significant increase during the first five weeks of lactation. There was variation in the weight of the animals over the eight weeks of lactation, observing a decrease in the first 4 weeks. Change was observed in the concentration of NEFA in plasma of dairy goats during peripartum. Concentrations of NEFA in plasma of goats not differ in the days 21:07 prior to delivery and increased at parturition and peaked 7 days postpartum (0.98 mmol / L); after this period decreased proportionally until reaching a similar concentration those observed prior to delivery. There was an increase in the infiltration of lipids in the liver of goats in the first weeks postpartum, although not enough to cause serious damage in hepatocytes. There was no change in the area of adipocytes from subcutaneous adipose tissue, perirenal and omental regions studied.
