This study analyzed the applicability of the Method of Global Understanding of Associations (MEGA) and quality management in the commercialization of lettuce at the Farmers Market of São João Evangelista in Minas Gerais state. Pre- and post-harvest production losses were identified along with other factors that could prevent the quality production cycle for lettuce. The paper presented the results of applying MEGA for quality assurance based on field surveys carried out among local growers selling lettuce at the farmers market in the period 2011-2013. To implement MEGA and quality management, it was necessary to adopt concepts and basic practices of general management for the production of horticultural crops. The field research carried out with lettuce growers involved visits to the production sites and interviews with the vendors at the Farmers Market. The assessment included: a) the use of semi-structured questionnaires; b) evaluation of participant's behavior; c) photographic record; d) observation of planting practices; and e) post-harvest appraisal based on the Classification Standards of Lettuce from the Paulista Program for the Improvement of Standards and Commercial Packaging of Vegetables. In the overall analysis of MEGA quadrants, it was observed that farmers (A 1 to A8) failed to perform the core strengths for quality management involving productivity, capacity, innovation, and quality itself. It was concluded possible to classify lettuce under CEASA pre- and post-harvest guidelines using MEGA analysis to evaluate the quality of lettuce commercialization from local growers at Farmers Market in São João Evangelista (MG).
