Resumo: Pest insects can have negative impact on cotton production but biological control can reduce the excessive use of insecticides in this crop. The gregarious endoparasitoid of Lepidoptera and Coleoptera pupae, Palmistichus elaeisis Delvare & LaSalle (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), for having a generalist habit and being easily reared within the alternative host, can be used in the biological control of the plagues that attach cotton plants. The objective of this research was to study the impact of the insecticides acephate, cartap, chlorfenapyr and deltamethrin, used in pest management programs for cotton, on mortality, reproduction and female reproductive system of P. elaeisis. Adult females of P. elaeisis, up to 24 hours of age, were exposed to cotton leaves treated with 1, 10, 25, 50, 75 and 100% of the recommended field dose of these insecticides, while the control had only distilled water. The mortality of P. elaeisis was evaluated at 24, 48 and 72 hours after exposure to these insecticides. Acephate and chlorfenapyr killed 100% of the individuals of this parasitoid with these doses after 24, 48 and 72 hours. The mortality of P. elaeisis exposed to cartap and deltamethrin at their maximum doses was 15 and 38%, respectively, after 72 hours. For this reason, the effect of the insecticides on reproduction and ovary of P. elaeisis was evaluated. Deltamethrin at the dose of 100% reduced the parasitism rate of P. elaeisis in 30%, but had no effect on reproduction of this parasitoid. Cartap, even being a selective insecticide, inhibited parasitism of P. elaeisis at the doses of 50 and 100%, and caused the death of nurse cells of this parasitoid at the early development stage of its oocytes. Acephate and chlorfenapyr were highly toxic to P. elaeisis and their use with this parasitoid should be avoided. Deltamethrin was selective and with low impact on reproduction of P. elaeisis and its use with this parasitoid is recommended. The cartap affects the reproduction of P. elaeisis and may limit the effectiveness of this parasitoid in the field.
