Resumo: In Brazil are currently known 732 reptiles species, but despite this great diversity, Brazilian reptile fauna is relatively poorly studied, not being uncommon the existence of areas totally unknown in terms of richness. In this context is found the zone of the middle São Francisco. Among the few studies published by herpetologists in this area, can be highlighted the studies in the area of quaternary paleodunas that constitute one of the most important records of paleoenvironmental changes during the Quaternary in Northeast Brazil. The fauna of snakes and lizards of the middle São Francisco has been characterized, through records in biological collections and collectings in Northern Minas Gerais. In addition, we pursued to detect, through models, locations at the middle São Francisco where it is likely the presence of these species. 1452 specimens were recorded, representing a total of 77 species. 24 areas have been detected as potentially suitable to harboring populations of Typhlops amoipira and 15 areas identified as potentially suitable to harboring populations of Procellosaurinus erythrocercus. The records of psamophilic species inhabiting areas with sandy soil far from the zone of dunes permit to infer that the sandy areas were more widely distributed in the past, but have recently acquired a relictual character, being isolated by non-sandy soil matrix. Hence, the models proposed by this study are relevant in order to optimize and direct resources and investments in field campaigns, identifying areas where there is a higher probability of finding the target species. Therefore, it is urgent to conduct diligent systematic sampling in localities of sandy soil in this region, in search of remaining populations of psamophilic species, intending for the establishment of new protected areas for the saving of relictual populations of these species.
