Resumo: Aiming to evaluate the floral longevity of Heliconia bihai stems five experiments were performed at Laboratory of Postharvest Physiology and Technology, Embrapa Tropical Agroindústria in Fortaleza-CE. The first one consisted of submitting the stems to recuts at every 24 or 48 hours after harvest. The re cut at every 24 hours promoted longer floral longevity (12 days) compared to the other treatments, (control and stems recuted at every 48 hours) with longevity of 10 days. The recuts promoted minor decreases in the visual appearance, mass loss and anthocyanins content, however did not influenced the water relative content of the bracts and pseudo stems and the activity of peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase compared to control stems. The goal of the second experiment was to evaluate the use of 2-mercaptoethanol on flower longevity. The 2-mercapto-ethanol not influenced the visual appearance, activity of enzyme peroxidase, losses of mass and water relative content of the pseudo stems. The longevity did not present significant differences among treatments, lasting at about 11 days. The third experiment was installed with the objetive to evaluate the use of spraying with benzyladenine at concentrations of 150 and 300 mg L-1. The benzyladenine promoted minors losses of mass and better grades for visual appearance of stems compared with control. However, did not present effect on the anthocyanins content, water relative content of the bracts and pseudo stems and in the activity of enzymes peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase. Based on the visual appearance the benzyladenine in both concentrations, as well as the control did not significant differences in the floral longevity, lasting 10 days. The fourth experiment aimed at to evaluate effect of pulsing with gibberellic acid at concentrations of 50 and 100 mg L-1. The gibberellic acid did not influence the loss of mass, relative water content of pseudo stems, anthocyanins content, activity of peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase. However, presented significant effect in the visual appearance and water relative content of the bracts. Based on grades of visual appearance, the floral longevity was 7 days for the control and 9 days for the gibberellic acid treated stems. The fifth experiment consisted of storing the stems in cold chambers at 7 ºC (97 % U. R.); 13 ºC (92% U. R.) e 15 ºC (58 % U. R.), coated or not with film from galactomanann of seeds of Caesalpinia pulcherrima for periods of 3 (1 day in cold temperature + 2 days at 25 ºC); 6 (4 days in cool temperature + 2 days at 25 ºC); 9 (7 days in cold temperature + 2 days at 25 ºC); 12 (10 days in cold temperature + 2 days at 25 ºC) and 15 (13 days in cold temperature + 2 days at 25 ºC). Stems of Heliconia bihai stored at 7 e 13 °C showed chilling injury symptoms at 6 days after harvest (4 days at cold temperature + 2 days at 25 ºC) with and without film. The use of the film did not influence the appearance of chilling injury. The best temperature for storage was 15 °C. The longevity of the stems stored at 15°C was 10 and 13 days, for coated and not coated stems respectively. Shorter longevities were observed for stems stored at 25 °C with the film, as well as for those at 7 e 13°C coated with film.
