Resumo: Located in the planning macro-region of Rio Doce/MG, the municipality of Ipatinga presents potential characteristics to the occurrence of areas predisposed to mass movement due to geologic, pedologic, geomorphologic and anthropic conditionants. The present thesis considered significant themes relative to the occurrence of these areas, such as declivity, morphology, structural alignments, soil usage and occupation, vegetal cover and pedology. By using these thematic maps, as well as geoprocessing tools, simulations were obtained, capable to predict the degrees of predisposition to the gravitational mass movements in the study area on a 1:20.000 scale. An inventory of mass movement occurrence was obtained and superposed with the thematic maps and the predisposition to gravitational mass movement letter. A greater frequency in the occurrence was observed in the concave forms and the classes of soil CXbd1 and CXbd2 (typical dystrophic haplic cambisol, according to Brazilian Classification of Soils), and the structural alignments presented expressive influence in these occurrences. The theme declivity presented a decrease relative to the predisposition to gravitational mass movement when its values were over 80%. The final results offer the municipal governors a tool that will be able to guide their technical decisions.

The final results offer the municipal governors a tool that will be able to guide their technical decisions.Situado na macro-região de planejamento do Rio Doce/MG, o município de Ipatinga apresenta potenciais características ao surgimento de áreas com predisposição a movimento de massa devido aos condicionantes geológicos, pedológicos, geomorfológicos e antrópicos. O presente trabalho considerou como significativos ao surgimento destas áreas os temas declividade, morfologia, lineamentos estruturais, uso e ocupação do solo, cobertura vegetal e pedologia. Utilizando- se estes mapas temáticos, juntamente com ferramentas de geoprocessamento, foram obtidas simulações capazes de predizer os graus de predisposição a movimentos gravitacionais de massa na área de estudo. Realizou-se um inventário de ocorrências de movimentos de massa e fez-se a sobreposição destes com os mapas temáticos e com a carta de predisposição a movimentos gravitacionais de massa. Observou-se nas feições côncavas e nas classes de solo CXbd1 e CXbd2 maior freqüência de ocorrências, e os lineamentos estruturais apresentaram uma considerável influência nas ocorrências levantadas. O tema declividade apresentou um decréscimo quanto à predisposição a movimentos gravitacionais de massa quando seus valores ultrapassaram a 80%.
