The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of orthodontic treatment in the bone crest level and in the interdental papillae in patients with reduced periodontium. We performed measurements of plaque index and gingival index, assessment of presence or absence of interdental papilla, classification of interdental papilla loss and measurement of the distance from crest bone to the point of contact. The patients answered a questionnaire anamnesis about dental and medical history and all previous documentation was made orthodontic. Were made the mounts of apparatus fixed Roth slot 0.22’’ with wire of Ni-Ti 0.12’’, 0.0.14’’ and 0.16’’, using simple collage tubes in molars. The technique used was Straight Wire. For standardize the initial and final periapical radiographs was used a positioner with a condensation silicone, which was handled according to the manufacturer's recommendations, to obtain a true copy of each tooth, so we could maintain the same angle in both radiographs. To obtain bone measurements of the apex and the bone crest start and end, we used a ruler, on periapical radiographs. Were evaluated for bone crest only the teeth of the upper lip of the battery. Mesial and distal measurements were obtained by a single observer calibrated (Kappa = 0.50). The age range was between 27 and 53 years (mean 40.27 ± 8.15 years). By using the parametric test Student's t test for the significance of the radiographic measurements, we found that in only four pairs there was no statistically significant difference: pair "5" (RI = 11.40 ± 3.86 and RF = 12, 00 ± 3.09, a difference of 0.60 and p = 0.081); pair "6" (RI = 12.20 ± 3.08 and RF = 12.90 ± 2.69, a difference of 0.70 and p = 0.066); pair "9" (RI = 11.63 ± 2.33 and RF = 11.75 ± 2.43, a difference of 0.13 and p = 0.731) and; pair "10" (RI = 12.25 RF = ± 2.82 and 12.38 ± 2.50, a difference of 0.13 and p = 0.801). We evaluated only the taste of the battery top and bottom lip, except for those patients who did not have the lower teeth treated orthodontically, due to the use of removable partial denture. It was verified by non- parametric Wilcoxon test, which showed a statistically significant (p = 0.02) only in the pair "2" (12M-11D), with mean and standard deviation of 1.80 ± 0.79 (before) and 2.60 ± 0.52 (after) with a difference of -0.80. It can be concluded that orthodontic treatment in patients with reduced periodontium was effective at the level of bone crest. However, regarding the classification of the papillae, although it has not made major changes, it was concluded that the patients had clinical benefit compared to the aesthetic orthodontic treatment.
