Probióticos e doença diverticular do cólon não complicada sintomática: uma revisão sistemática com metanálise

This study aims to evaluate, through a systematic review with meta-analysis, the effects of the use of probiotics on abdominal pain, abdominal distension and on fecal calprotectin levels in patients with uncomplicated diverticular disease of the colon. Methodology: Studies were searched in the Pubmed, Lilacs, Medline, Science Direct, Web of Science,Cochrane Library, Embase and Scopus databases in August 2021, using keywords obtained from the Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS) of the Virtual Health Library and terms MeSH and applied inclusion and exclusion criteria. Review Manager 5.3 software was used for meta-analysis calculations (29). To investigate the inverse of the variance, the means and standard deviations of the results of each study were necessary. Fixed effects of treatments were studied; yet, in case of significant heterogeneity between studies, random effects were analyzed. Heterogeneity was considered by the Q2 and I2 tests. Results: Ten studies were included, which corresponded to a sample of 768 patients with the disease. The meta-analysis concluded that the use of probiotics alone was not effective in relieving symptoms. The assessment of fecal calprotectin was not possible through meta-analysis due to the few studies that evaluated this outcome and the lack of standardization of results in the studies found. Conclusion: We observed that the combined use of probiotics with other substances (dietary fibers, aminosalicylates or non-absorbable antibiotics) was more effective when compared to the isolated use of probiotics in relieving abdominal pain and bloating.
