Resumo: The objective of this work was to investigate the origins, development and daily life of the Venetian Ghetto, which recorded 500 years of existence, having as a force of attraction ethnic and identity aspects manifested in the exercise of the Jewish religion, within the historical evolution of the Republic of Venice and in the context of the relationship of the Jews with the wider community. The ghetto is located in the city of Venice, in the district of Canareggio, from its foundation in 1516 to the present day. The first chapter deals with the origins of the Ghetto, from the meaning of the name to the relationship of the Republic of Venice with the Jews that marketed on "terra ferma," the need for funding Venetian society as opposed to usury not allowed by the Church, and finally to the decree of 1516 with the institutional creation of the "Ghetto" and its initial activities with the inauguration of the pledge banks. The second chapter addresses the arrival of three different nations (Todesco, Levantine and Ponentine), which will lead to the expansion of the Ghetto and strong cultural activity, and presents the main developments until the official extinction of the Ghetto by Napoleon in 1797. The third chapter describes the Ghetto today. The research was of a historical (deductive) and anthropological nature, since the work developed belongs to the theoretical field related to the theory of identity, covering aspects pertinent to ethnicity and religious identity. Thus, there was a search for elements indicative of prejudice, discrimination, segregation and self-segregation in the object of study. The methodology was based on an exploratory field survey that included interviews with Italian researchers on the subject and current inhabitants of the Ghetto, in order to identify the contemporary characteristics of the place. In order to carry out the interviews and gather information, three visits to the Ghetto were made. During the three visits, there were encounters with the historian Umberto Fortis, one of the main scholars of the subject. In addition, Professor Fortis provided much of the material used in this work and authorized its use. Since this material was not published by the author, it was not possible to make explicit reference to it.
