Resumo: | This works examines the religious persecution and the search for dialogue that took place in the period in which Presbyterian Church was implanted in the State of Ceará, Brazil (1875-1930). Its theoretic references are the thought of Michel de Certeu, Norbert Elias, Pierre Bourdieu and Michel Foucault. The bibliographical research is focused on Presbyterianism and its performance in Ceará. The main hypothesis is that Presbyterianism in Ceará suffered very hard persecutions, that led it to make efforts for promote religious dialogue. Presbyterian Church started its activities of Protestantism divulgation in Brazil in the year of 1859. It had quick acceptance, especially due to a liberal elite that came from Brazilian republican regime. In Ceará, the deployment of Presbyterianism occurred from 1875, specially with the arriving of missionary De Lacy Wardlaw, in 1883. The organization of the first Presbyterian Church in Ceará happened em 1890. In order to investigate further the assumptions of this work, it's interesting to notice the importance of strategies. For instance, Presbyterianism has used the railways to penetrate into the hinterland and has published newspapers to inform and educate people (protestant and catholic). In these efforts, because of the very hard religious persecutions, Presbyterians sought to make enforce laws that contributed to religious dialogue. Persecutions had a politic and religious character and it was revealed by gossips, stigmatization und violence. Presbyterian reverend Natanael Cortez had a central role in the search for dialogue. He used cultural and politic ways to suppress persecutions. His efforts produced the consolidation of Presbyterianism in the State of Ceará and paradoxically an approach to Catholicism. |
