The research presented here aims to understand and contextualize the formation of the national identity, seeking the perception of the role of Paulista Samba in this process of formation. In addition to the search for an understanding of the reflex of rural samba in the urban samba, paulista samba is compared to the carioca samba. It should be emphasized that the focus of this study is the rural samba of São Paulo. The methodology used in this academic research was the bibliographical, being this fundamental for the accomplishment of this historiographic study, sought to use the comparative anthropological method. Using the reading of the classics of Brazilian literature, which relate the course of national identity, we find more elements for a better interpretation of this organization. Works by the following authors were used: José Ramos Tinhorão, one of the main Brazilian popular music scholars of the 19th and 20th centuries, Mário de Andrade and his contribution that proposes a parallel between samba and the modernization of Brazilian culture. Magno Bissoli Siqueira, with the subject of the whitening of the samba, through the appropriation of this one by the government of Getúlio Vargas. Florencia Garramuño, with a comparative analysis of the importance of tango and samba; The tango for Argentina, as well as the samba for Brazil, deals with the concept "modern primitivism". The two rhythms with fundamental roles, as they became national symbols in the first decades of the 20th century. It is concluded in this study that there is an inherent peculiarity of samba from São Paulo, and this occurs through the Pirapora samba bass drum , this one migrating to the capital of São Paulo and bringing with it rural characteristics, with Geraldo Filme, Toniquinho Batuqueiro and other names. In urban space, the rhythm reaches the streets with strings, blocks until the carnival. And contemporaneously, there is a movement to rescue this rural samba from São Paulo, a movement of cultural resistance through groups such as Kolombolo, Samba Authentic and Samba da Vela.
