Donkeys are rustic animals with excellent adaptability to different environmental conditions and the activities to which they are submitted. The aim of the present study was to assess the hematological and biochemical biomarkers of Northeastern donkeys, since very little data has been published on the clinical aspects of these animals. In total, 62 adult Northeastern donkeys (male and female) were assessed. The animals were fed with grass, salt and hay from the Northeast of Brazil (Mirandiba, Limoeiro and Natal). Hematological and biochemical analyses were carried out (urea, creatinine, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase, gamma-glutamyl transferase, creatine kinase (CK), total plasma proteins, albumin, uric acid (UcA), calcium, phosphorus (P), chlorides (Cl), iron, triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), sodium, potassium, glutamine and glutamate). The results were submitted to version 13.0 of SigmaStat for Windows software, using ANOVA with two factors (gender and region). Tukey´s test was then applied, with the level of significance set at 5%. All of the data were displayed as mean +/- standard deviation values. Significant differences were recorded for the different biomarkers, according to gender: red cell distribution width coefficient of variation (RDW-CV); mean platelet volume (MPV); UcA; TC; TG; Ca; P. Significant differences were also found for the region: erythrocytes; hemoglobin; hematocrit; mean corpuscular volume (MCV); red cell distribution width standard deviation (RDW-SD); lymphocytes; urea; UcA; Glutamate; TC; TG; NEFA; CK; P; Cl. In conclusion, when analyzing the biomarkers for adult Northeastern donkeys from three different regions of the Northeast of Brazil, the values recorded for gender, region and breeding system were similar to those reported in the literature, even when the body score condition was not modified.
