Resumo: The main objective of this research is to analyze the social and economic impacts caused by the implantation of cisterns in the beneficiary family units of the community of Varjada, in the municipality of Passira (PE).The semi-arid region suffers from long periods of drought, high temperatures and unstable climatic changes. And these environmental issues make it a daily challenge for the survival of families in this locality. Trying to change this situation, for many decades several programs and public policies have been implemented with a view to reducing the impacts of drought. Among these projects, one of them has been considered a success and expansion case in the last 20 years: the cistern to collect rainwater. Following the Third Session of the United Nations Conference of the Parties to the Convention to Combat Desertification (COP 3) held in 1999, various civil society organizations organize themselves with a view to finding practical and efficient solutions to coexist with the drought. Then it arised the Articulation in the Brazilian Semi - Arid - ASA and in the following years the One Million Cisterns Program - P1MC was created with the objective of building cisterns in the semi - arid region. This system represents a significant impact on the lives of the farming families had brought social and economic changes. This work raised the new habits of consumption within the new economic context of families in the rural area of the city of Passira, interior of Pernambuco from the use of cisterns considered a social technology according to Dagnino (2004).This study has followed a qualitative methodology using content analysis techniques by authors Uwe Flick (2009) and Laurence Bardin (2008) and the quantitative methodology using descriptive statistics indicators according to authors Strauss and Corbin (2008).The data obtained were analyzed using the software tool SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) generating the results of interviews with 107 families. The results revealed the socioeconomic profile of this group of 107 farmer families presenting better conditions and quality of life with time and income gain of the majority of respondents. The new habits of consumption from income earned revealed that they are focused on agriculture and livestock as a means of improving life rather than personal or family spending. In the results found, there is still an improvement in the social and economic context, providing new perspectives for future generations towards sustainable development.

Submitted by Mario BC (mario@bc.ufrpe.br) on 2018-10-19T14:15:02Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Maria Helena Moraes Batista.pdf: 1169319 bytes, checksum: 575ced58055d4a278bcbc6f197bc6e96 (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2018-10-19T14:15:02Z (GMT).
