Resumo: The present dissertation in the area of Portuguese Language Teaching will discuss the selection and classroom use of textbooks in the 9th Grade of the Elementary School in a municipal school in the city of São Luís do Maranhão. This research is justified by the changes in the students profile which occurred with the socialization of the Brazilian school in 1960s. Due to those changes, the School became more complex, despite the teaching contents not being modified. Soon, the students began to show knowledge gaps as well as many special needs which were not being met. One example is the need not just to learn how to read and write but, at the same time, to deal with the differences between linguistic varieties, both oral and written. The present dissertation has as its Main Objective: to contribute to the improvement of the Portuguese Language Teaching during Elementary School in public schools. Its Specific Objectives are: 1) To verify the selected textbook searching for the selection criteria used by Portuguese Language teachers in the 9th Grade of the Elementary School in a municipal school in the city of São Luís do Maranhão; 2) To exam the contents proposed by the textbook selected by the teachers; 3) To characterize the students profiles using the questionnaire applied to informant students; 4) To make a diagnosis of the real difficulties presented by 9th Grade students of the Elementary School from the selected school based on compositions produced by them during class. Those compositions will comprise four chapters, as follows: CHAPTER 1 – THE TEXTBOOK AND THE BRAZILIAN SCHOOL. This chapter will present a short history of the production of textbooks followed by the definition and existing differences between textbooks and teaching resources. CHAPTER 2 – THE LINGUISTIC VARIETIES / VARIATIONS EXAMINED BY THE SOCIOLINGUISTIC VARIATIONIST APPROACH. This chapter will present a review of Labov’s variationist theory in order to characterize the students based on its linguistic varieties / variations. CHAPTER 3 – RESULTS OBTAINED FROM THE ANALYSIS OF THE TEXTBOOK USED BY THE SELECTED SCHOOL. This chapter will present the results obtained from the selection criteria of the textbook to be used in the 9th Grade of the Elementary School in the school selected for this research. CHAPTER 4 – STUDENT CHARACTERIZATION AND HIS / HERS REAL DIFFICULTIES TO TEXTUAL PRODUCTION. Justifica-se a pesquisa realizada, pois, com a sociabilização da escola brasileira, a partir da década de 1960 do século passado, houve uma mudança no perfil discente. A escola torna-se complexa, pois, o perfil discente mudou, mas, os conteúdos não foram modificados. Logo, os alunos apresentaram lacunas de conhecimento e muitas necessidades que não estavam sendo atendidas, como, por exemplo, chegar à escola e ter de aprender não só a ler e escrever, mas também, outra variedade linguística, ou seja, a variedade padrão tanto oral quanto escrita. Frente ao exposto, esta dissertação tem como Objetivo Geral: Contribuir com a melhoria do Ensino de Língua Portuguesa na escola pública de Ensino Fundamental; e, como Objetivos Específicos: 1) Verificar o livro didático selecionado em busca de critérios de seleção, utilizados pelos professores do Ensino de Língua Portuguesa do 9º Ano do Ensino Fundamental de uma escola municipal ludovicense; 2) Examinar os conteúdos propostos no livro didático selecionado pelos professores; 3) Caracterizar o perfil do aluno a partir de questionários aplicados a alunos informantes; 4) Realizar um diagnóstico das reais dificuldades dos alunos do 9ª Ano do Ensino Fundamental da escola selecionada, a partir de redações produzidas por eles em sala de aula. Esta dissertação é composta por quatro capítulos, a saber: CAPÍTULO 1: O LIVRO DIDÁTICO E A ESCOLA BRASILEIRA. Este capítulo apresenta um breve histórico da produção de livros didáticos acompanhado da definição e das diferenças existentes entre livros didáticos e recursos didáticos. CAPÍTULO 2: AS VARIEDADES / VARIAÇÕES LINGUÍSTICAS PELO ENFOQUE VARIACIONISTA DA SOCIOLINGUÍSTICA. Este capítulo faz uma revisão da teoria variacionista de Labov para a caracterização enunciativa dos alunos em suas variedades / variações linguísticas. CAPÍTULO 3: RESULTADOS OBTIDOS DAS ANÁLISES DO LIVRO DIDÁTICO DA ESCOLA SELECIONADA PARA PESQUISA. Este capítulo apresenta os resultados obtidos a partir dos critérios de seleção do livro didático a ser utilizado no 9º Ano do Ensino Fundamental da escola selecionada para a pesquisa. CAPÍTULO 4: CARACTERIZAÇÃO DO ALUNO E DE SUAS REAIS DIFICULDADES PARA A PRODUÇÃO TEXTUAL ESCRITA.
