This research is developed into the craftwork s universe, through a theoretical dialogue and the contact with craftsmen who were available to talk about themselves and their experience of making things. The contemporary ways of working are the background of these experiences, as they affect the material and subjective conditions of society, through the innumerable changes that have occurred in the last decades. The configurations of the hypermodern society, in a flexible and globalized economy, impose challenges to all professional activities, which includes those who work with crafts. This thesis investigates, in a phenomenological perspective, the relation that some craftsmen establish with their work at the capitalist economy nowadays. Based on interviews, ethnographic observations and theoretical dialogue, we discuss craftmanship as a specific way of working, in confrontation with the ideal of productivity and performance disseminated in hypermodern capitalist society. The key points of this ideal, such as the promises of freedom, creativity and authenticity, are discussed in dialogue with the living experiences of the craftsmen. Besides, the comprehension of work adopted in this thesis is based in Hannah Arendt's distinctions between labor, work and action, emphasizing the alternation of these activities in the handcraft work as a professional activity. Among the themes discovered in the analysis of the interviews, in an interdisciplinary dialogue with literature, we stand out the importance of this kind of work as a way of creation, socialization and singularization. This assumption dialogues with the concept of action, as understood by Hannah Arendt. Themes such as temporality, singularity, ethics and bodyness permeate the discussions about the specificities of the artisan work, which are related to the narrative dimension, aesthetic experience and art. In this perspective, art isn t thought only related to the objects created by craftsmen, but as an action in the world, comprehending life as a work under permanent construction
