Relações entre família, trabalho e lazer: o caso dos professores da Universidade Federal de Viçosa

The continuous advancement of technology, the pursuit for financial stability and competition in the job market drive people away from actual leisure experiences. These conditions also hinder access to new choices and personal and family activities, including spending time with children and relatives and even minding your own wellness. These troubles are present in the everyday living of university professors. Teaching, student advising, coordinating activities, managing projects, decision making, taking actions, participating in scientific events and meetings are part of the work routine of university professors. Very frequently, however, these professionals have difficulties in managing such different demands, and, consequently, reduce or eliminate leisure activities from their routine. The purpose of this study was to analyze leisure in personal and family everyday lives of professors of the University of Viçosa (UFV). Semi- structured questionnaires were applied to a randomly selected sample of 265 professors from different science groups. Quantitative data were analyzed in terms of means, frequency and correlation between variables, using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Qualitative data were transcribed, categorized and analyzed using the MaxQda software. Results indicated that, in some moments, professors give up recreation for a number of reasons, including time, the physical space, recreation activities policy and age, gender, spatial and financial issues. The relationship of people with time is affected by a number of factors and is very personal. To ponder the time, one has to think about the logic of work demands, academic and family obligations, the environment someone is in and also one s personal characteristics. In conclusion, professors at UFV consider leisure without disregarding their education and training, but have great difficulty in devoting time to this kind of experiences. Work, leisure and family establish interconnected relationships, and time and attitude will allow and guide priorities, in the presence of needs, desires and obligations important for the individual.
