Due to the rapidly aging world population, and because of the scarcity of studies on Brazilian elderly residents in institutions for Long Term Elderly Care - NHs, this study aimed to evaluate the quality of life (QOL) of elderly residents NHs St. Vincent de Paul City Uba / MG. The specific objectives were: to determine whether NHs St. Vincent de Paul, meets the criteria of RDC No. 283 of September 26, 2005, to characterize the epidemiological profile of elderly residents in the institution, evaluate the cognitive decline of institutionalized elderly in NHs St. Vincent de Paul, analyze the perception of institutionalized elderly in relation to their QOL and to identify possible factors that affect the quality of life of institutionalized elderly people in aspects related to physical capacity, psychological well-being, social relationships and environment, functioning sensory, autonomy, activities past, present and future, social participation, death and dying and intimacy. The sample consisted of elderly men and women selected on the Mini Mental State Examination - MMSE. This is a study of quantitative approach and a descriptive and exploratory. Data collection was implemented in three stages: the first step was to characterize the NHs in the study, in which, it was made use of the questionnaire developed by the National Agency for Sanitary Vigilance - ANVISA to assess the NHs, the minimum criteria for operation. In the second step the profile of the institutionalized elderly has been mapped, by making use of a socioeconomic questionnaire. The third phase consisted of evaluating the quality of life of institutionalized elderly. For this, we used the WHOQOL-Bref (World Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment Instrument) and the WHOQOL-Old module (World Health Organization Quality of Life Instrument-Old), specific for older adults. The data show that the study NHs on some items not comply with the standards of operation for NHs, which characterizes not inappropriate for the treatment of the elderly but, transgression of the law. It was also noted that the lack of social network (family, spouse, friends), low educational level and long residence time in NHs are factors that can promote the development of diseases that affect the mental state of the elderly. And that elderly residents in NHs showed no low QoL. However, it is suggested that the actions taken to improve QOL, consider the differences in lifestyle, personality, privacy, habits, autonomy, space and identify what older people really value.
