The brazilian demographic evolution has marked significantly his configuration and, consequently, the relations among different generations. The aging process is not restricted only to the demographic aspects, but it is also extended to the creation and fulfillment of public politics for a segment that demand better conditions of health, habitation, retirement and pensions, social assistance and worthy conditions of existence. This paper searched to analyze comparatively the perception of the family and the elderly into the aspects associated to the institutionalization of the elderly that live in the nursing home called Lar dos Velhinhos , located in the city of Viçosa-MG, their necessities and expectations, aiming to contribute with the development and adequacy of social politics in the search for quality of life of this population segment. The questions that had guided this research had been constructed from the following investigations: in the nursing home called Lar dos Velhinhos , located in Viçosa-MG, which are the factors that took to the elderly institutionalization in the perspective of the elderly and their respective families? Which is the expectation presented by the families when they re transferring the care responsibility of their elderly (defined for the historicalcultural tradition and religious rules) for nursing homes? How occur the among different generations relationship from the institutionalization of the elderly? Which are the perspectives and expectations of the institutionalized elderly? The elderly present feelings of belonging and identification to the institution and the rules of the place? The reason to the search of this knowledge is based in the fact of the little bibliographical material existence in Brazilian literature about the proposed question. In methodology terms, the nursing home chose as the local of study was Lar dos Velhinhos , located in the city of Viçosa-MG. The sample of this study was composed for 11 elderly that had basic requirement for research, which is to have a family, normal mental functions and preserved memory. The methodology used was the qualitative boarding, the collection technique and the data construction, in the first moment, the institution registers analysis and, in the next moment, interviews with elderly and their respective families. Through this study we were able to observe that the factors that took the elderly institutionalization were related to health problems, familiar conflicts and voluntarily. In accordance with familiar perception, the institutionalization is not seen as abandonment, but as necessity and care, motivated by the desire of families in supporting their elderly through a professional attendance, what gave satisfaction to elderly and improved the familiar life. The elderly institutionalized, in their majority, doesn t have expectations related to the institution, inexisting a feeling of belonging and identification of the interns related to the nursing home. With these results, we can conclude that even the existence of the Elderly Statute; many times their determinations are not fulfilled by these inadequacies to the Brazilian reality and by the lack of support and incentive from the State to the families and the nursing homes.
