Resumo: Plants have substances known as secondary metabolites which have diverse functions, among them to protect the plant against attack by pathogens. The use of plants as nematicides for nematode control has been extensively studied and the use of essential oils is an alternative for controlling nematodes in small areas. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of essential oils of wormwood, peppermint, oregano and thyme on the control of Meloidogyne javanica. Initially was assessed in vitro the nematicidal potential of these oils on hatching and mortality of juvenile nematodes. The essential oils were solubilized in dimethyl sulfoxide 2% and applied at the concentrations 0.05%, 0.25% or 0.5% in hatching and juvenile mortality tests. All oils tested reduced hatching and increased mortality of juveniles of M. javanica comparing to the control, for the three concentrations analyzed. Subsequently, the potential of these same oils was tested in a greenhouse in the suppression of the number of root galls and nematode eggs. Two methods were tested: foliar spray on tomato plants and direct addition of essential oils solutions into the soil. The essential oils were solubilized in 2% dimethyl sulfoxide and applied at the concentrations 0.05%, 0.25% or 0.5%, when applied by foliar sprays, and 0.25% and 0.5%, when added to soil. The oils were applied weekly for eight weeks. Sixty days after transplanting, plants were evaluated for shoot mass, root mass, number of galls and number of eggs. None of the oils suppressed the number of galls or eggs when they were applied by foliar sprays or when they were added directly into the soil.
