Resumo: The root-knot nematodes cause great losses in vegetable crops, and they are economically important pathogens of tomato in the world. The use of synthetic nematicides is not desirable due to contamination of the environment. Because of this, alternative control methods have been evaluated for the control of nematodes, such as the use of organic materials with nematicidal effect. There are several sources of organic matters that have proven to have nematicidal effect; however some of them are not consistent in the control of nematodes, although they increase crop productivity. Little is known about the influence of doses of these materials in the control of nematodes. In this study we investigated the effect of agriculture compost; peat, coffee pulp, cow manure, a liquid biofertilizer and earthworm humus on Meloidogyne javanica in tomato in the summer; and coffee pulp, peat and liquid biofertilizer at the recommended dose and half dose in the winter. The organic materials, in general, increased the nematode infection except the coffee pulp, which reduced the gall index. The organic materials, in general, increased the productivity of tomato except the biofertilizer, the only organic matter that did not promote plant growth. In the fall-winter experiment, coffee pulp and peat reduced the number of galls and eggs. The egg reduction for coffee pulp and peat was about 86% and 37%, respectively, for the same dose used in the summer. The biofertilizer only presented control in full dose, and in a half dose, increased nematode infection as in the summer experiment. The peat reduced the nematode population in the full dose. However it was not statistically different of the control treatment in the half dose. The coffee pulp reduced statistically more in full dose than in half dose.
