Altura inicial e adubação nitrogenada em pastos diferidos de capim-braquiária

This work was performed to evaluate the production and characteristics of the forage in pastures of Brachiaria decumbens cv Basilisk deferred, managed under different initial heights and doses of nitrogen fertilizer. The experiment was conducted at the Forage Division of the Federal University of Viçosa, MG, during the period from March to July 2010. The treatments consisted of three pasture heights, 10, 20 and 30 cm at the beginning of the deferral and four doses of nitrogen, 0, 40, 80 and 120 kg/ha, arranged in split plots in randomized block design with three replications. In the plots (8 x 3 m) were measured the heights and in the subplots (3 x 2 m), the doses of nitrogen. The variables evaluated were tiller population density, herbage mass and its components and morphological index tipping the pasture. There was no interaction between initial height of deferred grazing and nitrogen doses for all response variables are analyzed. Pastures kept higher at the beginning of the deferral had higher number of reproductive tillers (PREP), percentage of dead stems (PCM), tipping index (IT), total herbage mass (MFT), mass of green stem (MCV), mass dead stem (MCM), dead leaf mass (MFM) and lower number of vegetative tillers (PVEG), percentage of green leaf (PFV), lower ratio of green leaf and stem green (LV/CV). Nitrogen fertilization increased the number of live tillers (PVI), PVEG, MFT, MCM, MFM, MCV, green leaf mass (MFV), percentage of green stems (PCV), the relationship between living tissue and dead tissue (V/M) and decreases in percentage of dead leaf (PFM) and LV/CV. The application of nitrogen fertilizer and the initial height of the pasture results, generally, in similar effects on the herbage mass of deferred grazing of Brachiaria decumbens cv. Basilisk. Pastures deferred of Brachiaria decumbens cv. Basilisk with initial height between 10 and 20 cm have adequate structure, low tipping, low percentage of dead stems and high relationship green leaf/green stem. In the region of Viçosa, Brachiaria decumbens cv. Basilisk pastures can be deferred with initial heights of 10 to 20 cm and doses of nitrogen varied according to the farmer purposes and possibilities.
