There are numerous ways in which agricultural growth can affect economic development in a given society. One of the main ways that agricultural growth affects the level of welfare of the population is through the possibility of increasing the supply of food items, which generally is reflected in lower food prices, with important implications for the diet of people. Given these considerations, this study sought to investigate the relationship between agricultural productivity of the main constituents of the diet items of the population and food security of households in Brazilian metropolitan areas. As theoretical, it was made a review about the definitions and concepts of food security and nutrition as well as the relationship between this process and agricultural growth. As a method, the study used a qualitative choice model, the probit, which allowed to verify an association between an increase in productivity of the product groups analyzed and the probability of food security of households. The study relied on data from Household Budget Surveys 1995-1996, 2002-2003 and 2008-2009. From the results exposed, there were significant relationships between increased education level of head of household, the presence of persons under 18 years in the family and the fact that the per capita income household earning is less than minimum wage and food security. Moreover, among households of all income levels, productivity growth of the grains, the vegetables and fruit was associated with greater probability of food security in at least one of the periods analyzed. The same yields were important reducing the likelihood of food insecurity among households with low and high income per capita. Thus, we conclude that the productivity gains actually are associated with greater household food security, even at low ratios due to the strong influence of the private characteristics of the households, such as education and income. Moreover, from the distributive perspective, it appears that productivity growth contributes to reducing food insecurity across all income strata.
