Resumo: | Concern about water in the state of Espírito Santo led the state government to adopt measures to contribute to the conservation of this natural resource. The Benevente river basin, located in the southern state, was chosen as pilot area of the Project ProdutorES de Água. The lack of more detailed information of geoenvironments Benevente river basin contrasts the importance of managing the use of natural resources based on knowledge of the actual carrying capacity and vulnerability of these resources. Knowledge about the characteristics of different environments within the Basin and Sub-basins contribute to better planning of space with a sustainable and more appropriate land use, to a greater increase in the quality and quantity of water stored within the Basin. This study aimed to determine the morphometric characteristics of the Benevente river basin, identifying the main geo- environments based on the pedogeomorphology characteristics; characterize the main soil classes in terms of physical, chemical and mineralogical and how they interrelate in the landscape; what types of land use are degrading the environment and suggest alternative use and land cover aimed at their conservation. The characterization of soils of the study area was conducted to collect samples by trenching with subsequent morphological description of the profiles. The samples were submitted to physical, chemical and mineralogical analysis. Geographic Information System (GIS), ArcGIS 9.2 software, was used in the preparation of maps on scale 1:50.000. The geo-environments were defined as the combination of the peculiar pedo-geomorphological characteristics to each designated area. The morphometric features were obtained from Digital Elevation Model Hydrologically Consistent (DEMHC) prepared by the interpolation of contour lines (20 by 20 m) on scale 1:50.000. The Basin was divided into three main geoenvironments, according to the homogeneity of attributes, which have intrinsic characteristics: Serras with Haplic Cambisols (Inceptsols), Rock Outcrops and Red-Yellow Latosol (Oxisol), Tabuleiros Dissecados with Yellow Latosol (Oxisol) cohesive and Planícies Costeiras with Yellow Latosol (Oxisol) cohesive and lowlands (Gleys and Histosols). Mostly soils are poor in chemical elements and they are dystrophic or alic. The mineralogical composition consists mainly of kaolinite and gibbsite which indicates the low mineral reserve of the soils. Livestock is a major degrading activity in the Basin. Alternative uses and land cover vary according to the studied sites. With regard to morphometry, the upper Basin has a higher drainage density and is subject to greater structural control where the rivers flow on rocks. In the lower Basin the drainage density is lesser and the rivers flow over sediments toward the southeast, following a natural inclination of the Barreiras Group. |
