Resumo: | The aims of this study were to investigate the effects of swimming on adiposity, blood pressure, glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity in an animal model of metabolic syndrome (MS). Forty six two-day old spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) [body weight = 6.496 ± 0.177 (mean ± SD)] were used. From the second to the eighth day of life 23 rats received subcutaneous injections of monosodium glutamate (MSG) daily [4 mg / g body weight (MSG group)]. The other 23 animals received subcutaneously the same dosage of a saline solution (SAL group). After 20 weeks of life, these groups were divided into MSG.b, SAL.b (baseline group), MSG.c, SAL.c (control groups), MSG.t, SAL.t (training groups). Animals from trained groups were submitted to a swimming training program (5 days/week, 1 hour/day, 80% of aerobic capacity) for 8 weeks. Body weight gain, food consumption, blood pressure, glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivity, fasting insulin, visceral adiposity, visceral adipocyte area and composition of the eviscerated carcass were evaluated before and after the training period. Treatment with MSG increased (p <0.05) visceral adiposity, visceral adipocyte area, the percentage of carcass fat, and reduced (p <0.05) the percentage of protein and water in the carcass, and glucose tolerance. The swimming training program reduced (p <0.05), blood pressure (MSG.t SAL.t) visceral adiposity (MSG.t), and increased (p <0.05) glucose tolerance ( MSG.t SAL.t), insulin sensitivity (MSG.t), the percentage of water consumption (SAL.t) and the percentage of protein in the carcass (Msg. t). It was concluded that swimming training is effective in improving blood pressure, visceral adiposity, and glucose metabolism in the experimental model of MS. |
