The present paper aims to understand the constitution of the mozambican people identity, through the analysis of some cultural and linguistic elements emerging from the work «niketche: uma história de poligamia», by paulina chiziane (title in english: niketche: a story of polygamy ). In order to do so, we seek in the history of the africa s colonization the possibility of understanding the roots of the mozambican nation, a multicultural and multilingual country. Although inserted into the lusophonic context, mozambique has a cultural heritage prior to the portuguese colonization. Such a situation leads to the conclusion that the question of identity necessarily involves a return to the ancient origins and to the people, previous to the europeans, with its distinct characteristics, which have been integrated during the historical process of contact with other cultures, languages and traditions. Among these relations, the paper highlights the linguistic aspects that involve this contact between portuguese language and local languages from bantu origin. In addition, the literary work chosen as corpus provides raise and discuss cultural aspects, such as family and marital relations, emphasizing the issue of polygamy, religiosity, and african rituals, among others, as well as its implications for the composition of the mozambican society and its consequences in contemporary times. Therefore, the respect for their own characteristics, considering the intercultural aspects due to the recognition of differences and of the relations in the society, is a possible path to understand the driving force of the mozambican national identity.
