Resumo: | Despite the intense automation of tasks, handling materials is often performed in occupational enviroment. The material handling can be defined as any activity that requires use of force to lift, lower, carry, push, pull and hold an object. The Manual Load Handling is a necessary operation for loading/unloading, especially in local production, delivery center and end users, and this is a problem because it causes body overload. It has been associated with the development of musculoskeletal disorders especially in the lumbar spine, followed by upper and lower limbs, causing changes in the configuration of the posture. The aim of this study was to analyze the patterns of movement of the spine and knees during manual material handling activity. The study included 37 subjects, young adults, healthy and asymptomatic. The motion of the trunk and knees were measured by the inclinometer and electrogoniometer, respectively. The subjects were informed about a activity simulated of handling, a load (15 kg) should be transported from a fixed height to three different heights, called: high, intermediate and low. The two boxes were handled commonly found in the work environment and specially developed two prototypes for testing, cardboard and plastic materials. The range of motion and handling time were analyzed using descriptive statistics. To analyze the difference of the amplitude of the spine and knees in different heights and types of box ANOVA was used and post hoc Bonferroni adjusted when necessary. In the first study, we analyzed the motion of the spine and knees during handling of the two boxes commonly found in the workplace. The results showed significant differences in range of motion of the spine and knees in each of the heights and for each type of box. However, for the motion of flexion/extension of the spine showed no statistical difference between the types of box. The motion of lateral deviation right/left were larger for the cardboard box. The range of motion of flexion/extension of the knees were influenced by the types of box, being larger for the right knee and more evident in the handling to the low surface. Therefore, it is concluded that the handling hights and the types of box significantly influenced the amplitude of motion of the spine and knees. The motion flexion/extension of the spine were not influenced by the types of box. However, the motion of lateral deviation right/left were larger for the cardboard box. The motion of flexion/extension of the knees were influenced by the types of box, with larger amplitudes for the left knee and pronounced handling for the low surface, The motion of the spine strategies were influenced by the motion of the knees only to the low surface, so there is simultaneous adjustment of these structures, with extension spine and flexion of the knees. |

O manuseio de materiais pode ser definido como qualquer atividade que requer uso de força para levantar, abaixar, carregar, empurrar, puxar e segurar um objeto. O Manuseio Manual de Carga é uma operação necessária para o carregamento/descarga, especialmente nos locais de produção, centros de entrega e usuários finais, e por isso representa um problema já que ocasiona sobrecargas corporais. Ele tem sido relacionado com desenvolvimento de distúrbios músculoesqueléticos, sobretudo na coluna lombar, seguida pelos membros superiores e inferiores, levando a mudanças na configuração da postura. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar os padrões de movimento da coluna vertebral e dos joelhos durante atividade de manuseio de carga. Participaram do estudo 37 sujeitos, adultos jovens, saudáveis e assintomáticos. Os movimentos do tronco e joelhos foram mensurados por meio do inclinômetro e eletrogoniômetro, respectivamente. Os sujeitos foram informados a realizar uma tarefa simulada de manuseio, onde a carga (15 Kg) deveria ser transportada de uma altura fixa para três alturas diferentes, a saber: alta, intermediária e baixa. As caixas manuseadas foram duas comumente encontradas em ambiente do trabalho e dois protótipos desenvolvidos especialmente para o teste, nos materiais papelão e plástico. As amplitudes de movimento e tempo de manuseio foram analisadas por meio de estatística descritiva. Para analisar a diferença significativa das amplitudes de coluna e joelhos nas diferentes alturas e tipos de caixa foi utilizada a análise de variância ANOVA e post hoc com Bonferroni ajustado quando necessário. No primeiro estudo foram analisados os movimentos de coluna e joelhos durante o manuseio das duas caixas comumente encontradas em ambiente de trabalho. Os resultados apontaram diferenças significativas das amplitudes de movimento de coluna e joelhos em cada uma das alturas e para cada tipo de caixa. Entretanto, para os movimentos de flexão/extensão da coluna não houve diferença estatística entre os tipos de caixa. Os movimentos de inclinação lateral direita/esquerda foram maiores para a caixa de papelão. As amplitudes de movimento de flexão/extensão dos joelhos foram influenciadas pelos tipos de caixa, sendo maiores para o joelho direito e mais evidente no manuseio para a superfície baixa. Portanto, conclui-se que as alturas de manuseio bem como os tipos de caixa influenciaram de maneira significativa as amplitudes de movimento da coluna e joelhos. Os movimentos de flexão/extensão da coluna não foram influenciados pelos tipos de caixa. Entretanto, os movimentos de inclinação lateral direita/esquerda foram maiores para a caixa de papelão. Scope Clinical Biomechanics explores all facets of musculoskeletal biomechanics with an emphasis on clinical management. The role of basic and medical science is recognized in a clinical context. The readership of the journal closely reflects its contents, being a balance of scientists, engineers and clinicians. Authorship All authors should have made substantial contributions to all of the following: (1) the conception and design of the study, or acquisition of data, or analysis and interpretation of data, (2) drafting the article or revising it critically for important intellectual content, (3) final approval of the version to be submitted. Collaborators who do not satisfy the criteria for authorship can be listed as 'contributors' under the Acknowledgments section. Review Papers - authoritative, comprehensive, and well referenced reviews of a relevant subject (which are likely to be be longer than research papers). Correspondence - letters relating to matters published in the journal are encouraged. Submissions are screened by an editorial panel; if considered suitable for the journal, two or more peer reviewers will be allocated. Only a proportion of scientifically acceptable papers can be accepted for publication, so authors should be aware that submissions requiring extensive revisions are unlikely to be offered the opportunity to revise and resubmit. The same applies to revised papers requiring substantial revision following re-review. In cases where the original reviewers disagree, the editor may opt to obtain further opinion. Despite the intense automation of tasks, handling materials is often performed in occupational enviroment. The material handling can be defined as any activity that requires use of force to lift, lower, carry, push, pull and hold an object. The Manual Load Handling is a necessary operation for loading/unloading, especially in local production, delivery center and end users, and this is a problem because it causes body overload. It has been associated with the development of musculoskeletal disorders especially in the lumbar spine, followed by upper and lower limbs, causing changes in the configuration of the posture. The aim of this study was to analyze the patterns of movement of the spine and knees during manual material handling activity. The study included 37 subjects, young adults, healthy and asymptomatic. The motion of the trunk and knees were measured by the inclinometer and electrogoniometer, respectively. The subjects were informed about a activity simulated of handling, a load (15 kg) should be transported from a fixed height to three different heights, called: high, intermediate and low. The two boxes were handled commonly found in the work environment and specially developed two prototypes for testing, cardboard and plastic materials. The range of motion and handling time were analyzed using descriptive statistics. To analyze the difference of the amplitude of the spine and knees in different heights and types of box ANOVA was used and post hoc Bonferroni adjusted when necessary. In the first study, we analyzed the motion of the spine and knees during handling of the two boxes commonly found in the workplace. The results showed significant differences in range of motion of the spine and knees in each of the heights and for each type of box. However, for the motion of flexion/extension of the spine showed no statistical difference between the types of box. The motion of lateral deviation right/left were larger for the cardboard box. The range of motion of flexion/extension of the knees were influenced by the types of box, being larger for the right knee and more evident in the handling to the low surface. Therefore, it is concluded that the handling hights and the types of box significantly influenced the amplitude of motion of the spine and knees. The motion flexion/extension of the spine were not influenced by the types of box. However, the motion of lateral deviation right/left were larger for the cardboard box. The motion of flexion/extension of the knees were influenced by the types of box, with larger amplitudes for the left knee and pronounced handling for the low surface, The motion of the spine strategies were influenced by the motion of the knees only to the low surface, so there is simultaneous adjustment of these structures, with extension spine and flexion of the knees. |

Scope Clinical Biomechanics explores all facets of musculoskeletal biomechanics with an emphasis on clinical management. The role of basic and medical science is recognized in a clinical context. The readership of the journal closely reflects its contents, being a balance of scientists, engineers and clinicians. Authorship All authors should have made substantial contributions to all of the following: (1) the conception and design of the study, or acquisition of data, or analysis and interpretation of data, (2) drafting the article or revising it critically for important intellectual content, (3) final approval of the version to be submitted. Collaborators who do not satisfy the criteria for authorship can be listed as 'contributors' under the Acknowledgments section. Changes to Authorship This policy concerns the addition, deletion, or rearrangement of author names in the authorship of accepted manuscripts: Before the accepted manuscript is published in an online issue: Requests to add or remove an author, or to rearrange the author names, must be sent to the Journal Manager from the corresponding author of the accepted manuscript and must include: (a) the reason the name should be added or removed, or the author names rearranged and (b) written confirmation (e-mail, fax, letter) from all authors that they agree with the addition, removal or rearrangement.
