The respiratory diseases have constituted every day a motive of concern for the professionals of health. Asthma is among the main problems of public health in most of the world, being a chronic disease, characterized by variable obstruction to the aerial flow and bronchial hyper-reactivity; condition that, unchained by several incentives, among the most well-known are the environmental, domestic, occupational and emotional. The asthma varies by the seriousness and high prevalence, needing the involvement of all the levels of attention of the health systems. The classic instruments of asthma diagnosis are the application of epidemic questionnaires, the execution of tests of lung function and clinical evaluation. The objective of this work was to verify the prevalence of respiratory symptoms related to the asthma in adult patients that are directed to the public service of evaluation of pulmonary function of the municipal district of Votuporanga-SP, participating in the study were 96 adults and seniors that presented at least an asthma symptom verified through the application of the questionnaire ATS DLD-78. The prevalence of symptoms related to the asthma was larger in the male gender, the dyspnea was the symptom more referred by the participants followed by the cough and shrill sound in the chest and also a symptom of greater relationship with smoking and work in environment with dust, 29% of patients had spirometry within the pattern of normal and 43% were the result of DVO. The study is opportune not only because it punctuates the ignorance of the prevalence of the asthma in adults in Brazil, but also for the incentive of creating a reliable instrument, validated and specific for this population for the research of the epidemiology of the asthma.
