Resumo: Agribusiness is still one of the most important sectors for the Brazilian economy and even globally it continues to play a key role, especially in the food sector in relation to global population growth. The objective of this paper is to analyse how agribusiness in Brazil has developed from 1970 to the present, with a specific focus on the evolution of productivity in the sector and how it has affected the country's economy, natural resources and human capital over the years. Secondary sources were used to carry out this analysis, including studies in the literature to date, along with the collection and processing of data found on the platforms of Brazilian and international organizations (e.g., the World Bank, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, etc.). The results observed following the completion of the study show the significant contribution of agribusiness to the growth of the Brazilian economy and its competitiveness in the international context (Brazil is to date the fifth largest country by value of global agricultural exports). At the same time, the significant impact that the sector's evolution has had on the country's natural resources and how the latter has influenced the labor market dynamics of a developing economy were noted. In this regard, the paper also examined the possibility of combining productivity growth with the preservation of natural capital. Finally, public policies aimed at trade liberalization and investment, especially by the public sector, in research and development, as well as the presence of favourable starting conditions such as the wide availability of land that can be used for agricultural production, were identified as the main causes of agribusiness development in Brazil.
