Resumo: | The fast-moving consumer goods industry had its business environment globally affected by the recent crises of the COVID-19 pandemic and the war between Russia and Ukraine. We can also observe the strengthening of sustainability as a consumption driver and the intensification of debates on the transition to the circular economy (CE), in addition to the growing interest in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), demanding greater attention to innovation and ambidexterity, or that is, the balance between exploration and exploitation strategies, which has been little explored in the literature. In this study, located in the research fields of innovation in the supply chain, we use Organizational Ambidexterity as a theoretical lens to analyze how companies have conducted the transition process to EC and how they are dealing with the tensions arising from this context, both internally and with other stakeholders. The originality of this multiple case study lies in the investigation of four consumer goods supply chains, whose focal companies have an intense use of packaging, the upstream link is formed by manufacturers of five different types of packaging materials, and the downstream link, by distribution and sales companies. Data collection was carried out through interviews with 40 professionals who work in 24 organizations, as well as document analysis of their websites, sustainability reports and public statements by their leaders. The main results indicate that the ambidextrous focal companies encourage their suppliers to also be ambidextrous and impact the competitiveness of packaging companies. In addition, the data indicate that the public environmental commitments declared by the focal companies influence the companies in the other links in the supply chain, to the benefit of the CE. The research brings a conceptual model, which proposes that the ambidexterity of the supply chain is favored by the strategic alignment of the functional areas of the ambidextrous focal company. In addition to theoretical contributions to the fields of organizational ambidexterity and supply chain innovation, the study presents insights for managers who work in fast-moving consumer goods supply chains, suggestions for public policy making, and an analysis of how and which SDGs can be impacted by its implementation. |

The fast-moving consumer goods industry had its business environment globally affected by the recent crises of the COVID-19 pandemic and the war between Russia and Ukraine. |
