O que é a pesquisa acadêmica em administração em saúde? Tentativa de uma definição consensual

Health management, as an educational area, is fairly developed in Brazil. However, the health management academic research area has not reached the same level of recognition. In addition, this academic area has many overlaps with other adjacent scientific areas. Evidences also show that there is not a clear and agreed definition of the scope and distinctive characteristics of this area. The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is an implicit shared conception among health organizations academics and develop a fundamental consensual definition of studies in health administration. Based on the theoretical framework of scientific fields, and using the distinctive lexicon identification/consensual conception ─ a technique already applied in other areas ─, a survey among scholars interested in healthcare organizations was performed to capture characteristic conceptual elements of the area, its main distinctions, especially against the general administration, and to derivate an implicit consensus. In parallel, a thematic analysis was also performed in order to increase the validity of the findings. In a second survey, performed with key authors, scientific authorities and journal editors from adjacent areas, there was an attempt to extract their views on an explicit definition of the area, its distinctive characteristics and boundaries with these specifics areas. The analysis of survey data, allowed to perceive the existence of an underlying consensus, to draft a tentative definition of the area, and to notice that several of the elements present in this definition were also found in the responses of scholars from the other selected adjacent areas. The study may contribute to the development and strengthening of health administration as an area of research and teaching.
