Resumo: This work aims to highlight the emergence and importance of an adequate document management and preservation policy as a public policy in smart and sustainable cities, illuminated by the document management model of APESP. In addition to its historical importance, the preservation of documents in paper or digital support must be ensured and the necessary technological advances to avoid the obsolescence of documents in the future must be taken care of. It is clear on the research on document archiving that the authors and researchers on the subject discuss which documents, public or private, should be kept and preserved as a documental collection. And at the moment, we talk about safeguarding documents, whether it's physical or digital, through document management.

Além da sua importância histórica, a preservação dos documentos em suporte de papel ou suporte digital deve ser assegurada, e os avanços tecnológicos necessários para evitar a obsolescência dos documentos no futuro precisam ser observados. Fica claro nas pesquisas sobre arquivamento documental que os autores e pesquisadores do tema discutem quais documentos, públicos ou privados, devem ser mantidos e preservados como acervo documental.
